Our mission is to improve communities by empowering people to recognize, create, and take action on meaningful opportunities to serve. We believe community service should encourage responsibility, initiative, personal growth, civic awareness, and a lasting habit of recognizing opportunities to help others. By inspiring people to take meaningful action in the places where they live, we seek to strengthen individuals, improve communities, and ultimately improve the world.
Who We Are
Improve Your State, Inc. is a charitable and educational nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code based out of Denver, Colorado.
Our purpose is to promote and facilitate voluntary community service, civic engagement, and practical community improvement. We help people identify community needs, learn how to plan useful projects, take responsible action, document what they accomplish, and contribute to stronger communities.
Meaningful community service does not always require a traditional volunteer placement or scheduled shift. Many worthwhile projects can be completed independently, remotely, or in person, on a participant's own schedule. Improve Your State helps make those opportunities easier to discover, understand, complete, and document.
We provide free educational materials, project ideas, how-to guidance, and downloadable resources designed to help people improve the places where they live. An account is only required for platform features such as submitting service activity, participating in account-based peer review, maintaining an HourLog, or using other record-based services.

Program SupervisorDebra Massy supports the administration of the Improve Your State community-service program and its participant review and verification processes. Program supervision helps maintain review standards, address submissions requiring additional scrutiny, and support accountable community-service records.
How Improve Your State Works
Improve Your State combines education, practical project guidance, community participation, and technology to help people move from recognizing a community need to taking meaningful action and documenting what they accomplished.
Our Education Center and how-to resources explain practical ways to identify community needs, plan projects, work safely, and make useful contributions.
Participants can browse project ideas or identify an appropriate need in their own neighborhood or community and decide what they can realistically accomplish.
Participants using the documentation system can submit project information, service time, and supporting evidence for review.
Participants can also contribute by reviewing projects submitted by others through the platform's independent peer-review process.
Community Service on Your Own Time
Work schedules, school schedules, transportation, limited volunteer openings, and other practical barriers can make traditional placements difficult. Improve Your State provides another path by helping people find or create appropriate service projects that can often be completed independently, remotely, or in person.
Peer Review and Verification
Submitted projects are evaluated through a structured review process involving multiple independent reviewers. If a reviewer raises a concern about the work, evidence, or claimed service time, the submission can receive additional scrutiny rather than simply passing on the basis of a narrow majority.
Program supervisors and authorized reviewers can provide additional oversight when a submission requires direct review or verification. This helps distinguish the HourLog from an informal self-reported list of activities.
Helping the Community
The program encourages people to notice needs that might otherwise be overlooked: litter that needs to be removed, neighborhood areas that can be improved, organizations that need supplies, people who need assistance, and other appropriate projects where individual effort can make a visible difference.
Building a Habit of Service
Our purpose is not simply to help someone reach a required number of hours. We want participants to become accustomed to noticing opportunities to contribute and taking responsible action when they see a meaningful way to help.
Community Service for Different Needs
Improve Your State can be used for voluntary service as well as service completed for a school, employer, probation program, court, agency, or other organization. In many cases, properly completed and verified service may be usable toward court-ordered or other required community-service obligations.
Requirements vary. Improve Your State does not control the rules of a court, probation department, school, employer, or other receiving organization and cannot guarantee that any particular project, HourLog, or service activity will be accepted. Participants should confirm the requirements of the organization that will receive their service record.
We Want Your Action, Not Your Money
Improve Your State does not currently solicit or accept monetary donations from the public. We believe one of the most meaningful ways people can support our mission is by donating their time, skills, effort, and useful resources directly to the communities around them.
Volunteer, organize a project, help someone else complete one, review community-service work, share useful knowledge, or simply notice something that needs to be improved and take responsible action.
